Corrosion Protection for Buried Water Mains

Ductile iron itself resists corrosion better than steel. But buried pipes need extra protection. EN545 provides a multi-layer system.Layer 1: Cement Mortar Lining (Inside)Portland cement mortar does three jobs. First, it prevents water from contacting the iron. No contact means no rust inside the pipe. Second, it creates a smooth surface for high flow. Third, the cement keeps the water pH stable.Layer 2: Zinc Coating (Outside)We spray 200 g/m² of zinc onto the pipe exterior. Zinc corrodes before iron does. This is cathodic protection. Even if the bitumen coating gets scratched, zinc protects the pipe. EN545 does not require zinc. But we include it as standard because it adds decades of life.

Restrained Joint (For High Pressure and Changes in Direction)Water pressure tries to push joints apart. At bends and tees, the force is strong. Restrained joints lock the spigot into the socket. No concrete thrust blocks are needed. Saves time and material.
