The installation quality and sealing performance of ductile iron pipe joints determine the long-term operational safety of the entire water supply and drainage pipeline network. Unlike rigid steel pipe welding and plastic pipe bonding connection, mainstream ductile iron pipe systems adopt flexible socket-spigot connection with rubber gasket sealing, which is the core standardized construction method specified by ISO 2531 and domestic municipal pipeline construction specifications. This flexible connection structure can adapt to foundation slight settlement, pipeline thermal expansion and contraction, and small-angle pipeline deviation, effectively preventing pipe cracking and interface water seepage caused by geological changes.
Complete standardized installation procedures include pre-construction inspection, interface cleaning, rubber gasket assembly, pipe docking, depth calibration and backfilling protection. Before construction, workers must inspect the appearance of each pipe and fitting, check for cracks, pits and damaged sealing surfaces, and verify product certificates to ensure all materials meet engineering standards. The sealing rubber gasket is the key consumable for leakage prevention. It is forbidden to use expired, deformed or aging gaskets, and lubricants such as soapy water must be used instead of engine oil to avoid chemical corrosion and rubber aging acceleration.


In the gasket installation stage, the rubber ring must be fully embedded into the socket groove without distortion, flipping or offset. During pipe docking, the spigot end should be aligned slowly and pushed horizontally to the standard insertion marking line, avoiding violent hammering that may damage the ductile iron pipe body and sealing structure. After docking, workers need to conduct visual inspection and gap detection to confirm uniform gasket stress and tight joint fit. For flange-connected pipe fittings, symmetric bolt tightening is required to ensure balanced pressure and prevent local sealing failure.


Post-installation backfilling also follows strict norms. Fine sand cushion layers must be laid around the pipe body to avoid direct extrusion of hard stones on the pipeline, protecting the flexible joint structure. After construction, segmented hydrostatic pressure testing and tightness testing are mandatory.
